Iloilo Paraws On the Move
by guest blogger Maui
It’s more than just mini boats with artful sails on water; these sailboats are the stars for the yearly Paraw Regatta festival of Iloilo. The festival will commence this Sunday (yipee! more pictures!) February 17th. Wasn’t there a festival recently held here as well? Yep there was, but that was THE Dinagyang festival which is completely different from this one. What is this Paraw Regatta festival anyway? It’s basically a race of manually hulled sailboats in the strait between Iloilo and Guimaras Island. If you haven’t had the chance to witness sailboats do their own thing, then this festival is just what you need over the weekend. This native sailboats feel the need for speed so don’t underestimate them!

Also, if you are the artsy type of person and a snapshot addict, you will enjoy staring up at the big sails exhibiting different forms of art. It can become festive actually because nearby, there are small kiosks selling BBQs, sisig, kinilaw and booze to satiate your hunger. I don’t know about you but if you ask me, this 36 year old racing festival is a two thumbs up!
I’m not a sailor but you can read more of my posts here.
