Installing a Linux distribution side-by-side with a Windows installation can be a hassle. You have to partition the drive, install trough boot, then wait for Linux to finish installing. Sometimes it will be successful, and sometimes you end up with a corrupted Windows boot record. Sucks doesn’t it?
It doesn’t have to be like that anymore! Wubi is the answer! What is Wubi?
Wubi is a Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other application. If you heard about Linux and Ubuntu, if you wanted to try them but you were afraid, Wubi is for you.
You don’t need to modify your pc in any way. It’s just a simple installer, and installs as you would any other program. Plus it’s absolutely free!
However, Hibernation is not supported under Wubi. Wubi’s filesystem is also more vulnerable to hardreboots (unplugging the power) than a normal filesystem, so you must try to avoid unplugging the power. These problems, however, are no longer present once the Ubuntu install created by Wubi has been transferred to a dedicated partition using LVPM.

I have just upgraded to Wordpress 2.5.. or should I say I just “reformatted” my blog to 2.5. Instead of just upgrading my Wordpress installation, I thought why not just start from scratch? That way the database wouldn’t be filled with unnecessary entries from plugins I no longer use
Well, it wasn’t an easy task but I got it done!
I used Wordpress’ export function to export the entries, pages and comments. Then I just imported it into the new installation, which at that time was installed in a subfolder. Hehe! After I finished installing everything, I moved the installation to the top level of my domain.
I also kind of got bored with my old template so I decided to use a different one. This time the template of choice is Blog Oh Blog V2.0. Just a few more tweaks to the template and everything will be all good!

is it just me or has meridiantelekoms.com been defaced by some malicious type search engine?
i am fond of using firefox’s address bar as my search bar. using it usually directs me to Google results or the site itself. it still works for multiple keyword queries, but i noticed when i use only one word, it redirects me to some search engine type page..
at first i freaked out since i thought i may have some spyware on my computer. i did complete scans with my zonealarm security suite, but (more…)

have you ever been hit by a virus then finding out you could no longer access regedit, msconfig, or you task manager? well don’t worry, i will teach you how to restore them with a little visual basic script. now to get on with it..
first you have to open notepad or any text editor you prefer.
then copy and paste the following code into your text editor
Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
With WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
On Error Resume Next
.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools"
.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\DisableCMD"
.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableTaskMgr"
.RegDelete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\DisableTaskMgr"
End With
Mybox = MsgBox(jobfunc & enab & vbCR & "Restore_Finished!", 4096, t)
after that save it and name it as restore.vbs
actually you could name it anything you like. taskrestore.vbs , msconfigrestore.vbs , etc. but you need to have .vbs at the end so that it will save as a vbscript file.
after saving, locate the file and double click it to execute.
a pop-up will show saying that the restore is complete. thats it. your regedit, msconfig, and task manager has been restored.
for those who just want to download the file click here

The mailman came by today and i got two packages.. First was the Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) CD’s that i had requested. To tell you honestly it was rather quick this time around. That is, compared to my previous request for the 6.06 version.. hehehehe! I kind of felt like taking pictures… So here are a few shots..

Btw, if you want a copy for yourself, just register at https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ and request the package you want. The best part of it is its FREE!!
Oh, and my second package? Well it was my SSS id… I really look freaky in the picture so never mind that.. LOL! Better just stick with the Ubuntu for now…

That’s more than twice as much as the advertised 384kbps.. maybe they just haven’t noticed it yet.. or maybe their fixing something? LOLZ! i don’t know, but i hope this stays for a while…
UPDATE: well, my smartbro connection is still on the high.. hahahaha! better spend my time downloading some precious programs… LOL!

There comes a time when we forget things. But, what if that thing that we forget happens to be the Administrator password on the computer? Well, if you are running Windows XP, then there is an easy way to reset the password.
Here’s How:
1. press the START button then press RUN.
2. type in “CMD” (without the quotes) and hit ok. A command prompt window will open.
3. at the command prompt, type in
“net user administrator /random” (without the quotes)
and press enter.
4. command prompt will then give you a new password for your administrator account. Just don’t forget to jot it down.
And that’s it!!

Many people are hesitant to switch to a Linux OS platform.. They say that the programs are limited and there are no equivalents for the basic everyday programs that are found on the Windows platform..
I agree that the selection of programs is limited. What do you expect? It is open source.. But having no equivalents, I’m afraid that is not true..
There is a project called “The Linux Equivalent Project“. Their site gives a long list of programs available for the Linux platform. When you look at the list, you would see two columns.. The left column is the “Windows Software” and the right column is the “Linux Equivalent/Alternative”. And the good thing is, they’re free!! Some of the software also run on the Windows platform.
You might want to check them out at the The Linux Equivalent Project website.

If you are a fond user of Microsoft Word, then you had better be careful..Three unpatched bugs in Word have been uncovered in the last few weeks and two are already being exploited by attackers. The bugs allows attackers to create booby-trapped documents that steal information or take over a PC when they are opened.
No patch is yet available to fix these bugs.

Mozilla’s Firefox 2.0 has long been considered a safer Web browser than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, but a flaw in the Firefox Password Manager could enable hackers steal your login data.
The problem, known as a reverse cross-site request (RCSR)was first discovered by Robert Chapin, a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and I.T, consultant. The RCSR appears on blogs, message boards, or group forums that let users add comments with embedded HTML code.
On sites that allow users to enter code, a hacker can embed a form that tricks the user’s browser into sending its username and password information to the hacker’s computer. Because the form is embedded on a trusted Web site, the browser’s built-in antiphishing protection, which is designed to alert users to fraudulent Web sites, does not detect the problem.
Even worse, hackers can make the deceptive form invisible, meaning users can transmit their private data without even knowing it.
Bug #360493
The Mozilla Foundation has acknowledged the problem and named it bug #360493. Microsoft has also admitted that RCSR attacks can affect Internet Explorer, but most reports indicate that Firefox is the more likely target because of the way it stores usernames and passwords.
No patch has yet been released for the problem, but you can avoid reverse cross-site request attacks by simpy disabling your Firefox 2.0 autosave features for usernames and passwords. This feature is found in the “Options” window under the “Tools” menu.
Mozilla has indicated that it plans a fix in Firefox version 2.0.0.1 or 2.0.0.2.
